Deacon Dave Shea: Fifth Sunday of Easter

From a distance you could hear many conversations all going on at the same time. There was a sense of warmth and happiness in the voices, the voices of individuals who were happy to see one another, and happy to share what was going on in their lives. And occasionally there was a laugh as a story was re-lived, one they all knew they had heard countless times before, but never tired of hearing it again. And the smells from the kitchen were wonderful, the best recipes that had been in the family for generations, and were every one's favorite. And eventually the mother would gather all of them at the long table in the dinning room. The same table on which they had shared Sunday dinner for almost 40 years and they all said, "It is good to be here in this house...."

It was early in the morning and still dark. There wasn't even a hint of a new day coming yet, hardly what we'd describe as dawn. No hope of a new beginning. No hope of new life. No hope of a special family day, a day off from work, a time set aside to go to church and breakfast at our favorite spot, and maybe dinner later on at our grandparents. Not for Mary. The parents and God parents settled into their places, standing both excitedly and nervously by the font waiting for the moment when their sons and daughters would be gently lowered into the warm water that would change their lives forever.
But first some questions are asked. Questions they will answer on behalf of their children. Three Questions; "Do you reject sin so as to live in the freedom of God's children?", "Do you reject the glamour of evil and refuse to be mastered by sin?", "Do you reject Satan, Father of sin and Prince of darkness?"...

Deacon Dave Shea: Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

“Do not worry about your life, what you’ll eat or drink, your job, your savings, your retirement—don’t worry about any of it.” Could Jesus have been addressing a select group of wealthy merchants, who had everything they ever needed and dreamt about, at some Mediterranean spa attending a self-improvement workshop? Well, that would certainly be an explanation; one explanation, for a message that seems so out of touch with the real world. But he wasn’t. No, he was talking to his disciples; blue-collar workers, who often lived hand-to-mouth; who rarely had the luxury of being able to do some longer term estate planning. These were folks who were all consumed with the daily struggle to survive and totally absorbed in the challenge of living from meal-to-meal.
So how did they hear this sermon? How did they respond when Jesus told them to “look up at the birds in the air who neither sow nor reap?”
